Nintendo Wii The Nintendo Wii was released by Nintendo on November 19, 2006 in North America. As part of the seventh-generation of video games, it competed with the Playstation 3 and XBOX 360. A major part of the Wii was the Wii remote, or Wiimote, which detected human movements. It was one of the first video game controllers to detect human movements. The best-selling game on the console was Wii Sports, which sold a total of 82 million copies worldwide. The console had a price of $249.99 at release and sold a total of 101.6 million units by the time it was discontinued in 2013.
