The Whitney Museum of American was born out of sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's advocacy on behalf of living American artists. At the beginning of the twentieth century, unknown artists found it nearly impossible to exhibit or sell their work as patrons were focused on art being created by known artists in Europe. Recognizing the obstacles these artists faced, Mrs. Whitney began purchasing and showing their work, thereby becoming the leading patron of American art from 1907 until her death in 1942. Inspired by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's spirit of philanthropy toward unknown artists, this black nickel brass pin with hard enamel, made exclusively by Pintrill, is an expansion of our There Are Artists Among Us series with a gender inclusive translation.
