St. Joseph is an appellation d’origine controlee (AOC) located in the Northern Rhone region of southern France. Red wines must be made at least 90% from the red Syrah grape, and can have up to 10% Marsanne or Roussanne. In practice, red St. Joseph is generally 100% Syrah. They can have notes of spice, with fruit registers that range from red to blue to black.
