They were exported to North America in 1828, originally being known as the "Italians". By 1865, the breed was renamed to White Leghorns.  They are probably the most well and wide-known bird in the World. They are smaller framed birds, making them ideal for free-ranging, with minimal feed additives to their diet. They're overall friendly, not a breed that will openly come sit in your lap unless you've spent some time bonding with them.  They are extremely intelligent, and resourceful. All in all- the White Leghorn is actually the breed that holds the World Record since 1979, laying a whopping 371 eggs in 365 days!
