Her memoir, One Day I'll Grow Up and Be a Beautiful Woman, explores parenting and transgender rights in rural America. After graduating from the writing program at the University of Montana, she spent many years working as a public librarian and a high school librarian in her home state of New Hampshire. She now lives in California, writing and advocating for transgender youth. This workshop is for people who have been turning over a novel idea for weeks, months, or years; for those who have written parts of the novel; and/or for those who are haunted by constant images that they know want to somehow turn into a novel. In this course, we will talk and play a lot with process. We will experiment with different methods and see which ones feel right to us. By the end of the course, the goal is that each class member will have entered their novel--either for a first draft or a rewrite--and have a plan for how to move forward as well as pivot over the coming months. In addition, each student will submit up to twenty pages from their novel for workshop with the class.  Students will read each other's work as well as work that arises in conversation. Please bring the first page of what you're working on (or the first page of one section) to the first class. COURSE TAKEAWAYS: Students will get a clearer sense of their process. A deeper understanding of the structure of a novel A rough outline for the beginning third of their novel and/or a plan to move forward. A list of go-to techniques for when they are stuck. Week Two: Examination of novel structure. Week Three: Considering voice/perspective; character; place. Week Four - Eight: Workshop & conversation/exploration ONLINE COURSE STRUCTURE: This class meets weekly via Zoom.
