Markos Vamvakaris is the rarely-disputed master of Rebetiko, often called "The Greek Blues." In the 1920s, Turkey deported its ethnic Greeks, who headed to Greece, where their Athenian cousins saw them as pests and problems. Armed with thousands of years of Anatolian culture, heaps of opium, nowhere to go & nothing to lose, the Rebetes sang and played away their pain.
