this extra-thick, extra-heavy book is in such nice condition. it is a powerful, famous story, and this copy is a special one. i believe it's a first edition, though the copyright page does not state so. this is from comparing it to other editions. the front and back covers are a parchment-paper look with black cloth edges and spine. the title, author, and publisher are in gold on the spine.  what an exceptional gift for a literature-lover... it has no age smell or musty smell and no water damage or other issues. it is from a non-smoking home. the binding is as tight as if new. the book shows no markings or real wear/tear. it has the tiniest bit of aging at the cover corners and a few tiny discolorations on the wheat-colored front cover. it has no bent pages. it is missing the dust jacket. it came from a large estate sale at an overland park, kansas mansion. the many old books all looked in beautiful condition. published by doubleday & company, inc./garden city, new york 688 pages v
