GET COMPETITIVE. “Leashes are for dogs.” Aside from Aussie-isms like Legrope and Leggie, surf slang for leashes also include: Ding String, Surf Strap, Shot Cord, Kook Connector, Kook Cord, Sissy String, Dope Rope, Goon Strap. That’s what anti-leashers said when the surf leash first appeared in line-ups back in the early ‘70s. Then Bob Nealy at XM | SURF MORE started innovating on that front around 1973 when he founded the company. XM introduced the first velcro strap (among other innovations) and more and more people joined the movement. Leashes made sense. By the mid-70s, most surfers were on-board. And not too long ago a Surfer Magazine poll found that 99% of surfers now wear leashes most of the time. Comp is short for competition. The XM Comp premium leash is the all-around favorite leash cord strength/thickness for small to medium waves and competitive surfers. It’s on the thinner and lighter side and keeps your short board tethered while still feeling pretty free in the water.
