1850s Antique Staffordshire Ceramic Bacchus Head Wedding Jug

Rare Staffordshire pottery wine wedding jug. Molded in the form of Bacchus with alarming detail this smiling heathen figure was revered as green man throughout 18th and 19th century. His hair is adorned as foliage in form and color to further his affiliation with the old gods. His lock of hair also serves as a handle for ease of holding. It has the benefit of having a small spout as one of his hair locks in the front of his head for the more genteel pouring and a glut spout on the side for the passing around in male company. These are sometimes referred to as wedding jugs, but I have never come across one of such quality. This most likely dates to the early 19th century if judging by the features modeled on his face. Unmarked These would make a great birthday for any ceramic antiques expert or as an amazing addition to any Staffordshire or barware collection.
