Antique 1920s British religious Temperance Merthyr Rechabites champions medal. British made medal made from sterling silver with a central gold cartouche. This medal was made to be suspended from a necklace or Albert chain. The Rechabites promoted education among the young and the poor in order to steer them away from the avarice of drink. they often held scripture recitals, sports days and football competitions to promote health and music competitions which were usually religiously themed as well as choir competitions. It is assumed that this was a football champions medal for the league winners for the 1924/25 season. Marked on front: TP Marked on back: Merthyr Rechabites Champions 1924-25 Hallmarked: Anchor (Birmingham), Lion Passant (Sterling), Date letter(A), Makers Mark (indiscernible) This is a great piece of historical memorabilia for temperance movement or prohibition movement enthusiasts.
