Antique 19th C Bronze Sculpture by Thomas Cartier

Original bronze sculpture of a hunting dog by French sculptor Thomas Cartier (1879-1943). Stunningly patinated bronze sculpture depicting a red setter or pointer hunting dog with a thick collar on his neck. The dog has lit upon its prey scent which heightens his awareness and intensifies his tail into a straight alignment with his back in anticipation of the imminent attack. Cartier was a French sculptor and a late practitioner of the animalier style, which was a popular mid-19th century theme of naturalistic portrayals of animals. Cartier specialized in model-sized work of hunting dogs and big cats which were often placed within clocks and other decorative objects. Cartier is known to have participated in the Paris Salons from 1904 onwards, getting an honorable mention in 1908 and winning a gold medal in 1927.
