Antique hard times Temperance trade coin. This antique copper trade coin was struck for traders and merchants along with their families to use in the Temperance establishment in N Safford Albany, NY. These trade or merchant tokens were struck to encourage solidarity regarding temperance and abstinence when away from home and as a result of the panic of 1837 but they had been struck from 1833 until 1843. Also known as hardship tokens this merchant is a rare example of an 1830's temperance house which was well established and widely improved by 1837.
