It used in in racing competitions. Its wearer is pursued by an unmasked runner and, if caught, the unmasked runner wears the mask and is in turn pursued. Historically, these races trained men to compete, allowing the winner to gain social recognition among the tribe. This unique piece was hand made by the Dan people of the Ivory Coast. No factories or machinery was involved in the production process, only artisans and hand tools with painstaking
