Corridor in the Asylum
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch) September 1889 Van Gogh's struggles with mental health led him to voluntarily enter the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, housed in the Romanesque monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. Despite his confinement, he continued to pursue his artistic endeavors and produced numerous paintings during his year-long stay. Amidst the picturesque landscapes of wheat fields, olive groves, cypresses, roses, and irises that surrounded the monastery, Van Gogh also captured the interior of one of the asylum's corridors. Despite his use of vibrant colors, the corridor's sharp perspective creates a sense of emptiness and haunting. Van Gogh sent this drawing to his brother Theo, offering him a glimpse into his new environment. Unfortunately, Van Gogh's time in the asylum did not provide the hoped-for cure, and he tragically died by suicide shortly after. This poignant artwork stands as a testament to the artist's inner struggles and the emotional turmoil he experienced during this difficult period.
