First Steps, after Millet

First Steps, after Millet

$26.00

Vincent van Gogh (Dutch) 1890 During his time at the asylum in Saint-Rémy in 1889–90, Van Gogh immersed himself in the art of Millet, whom he deeply admired. In an act of homage and artistic interpretation, Van Gogh painted twenty-one copies of Millet's works. To him, these copies were like translations, similar to how a musician interprets a composer's piece. He used black-and-white images, such as prints or photographs, as his starting point, and then let his imagination unleash a symphony of colors onto the canvas. In this particular piece from January 1890, Van Gogh took a squared-up photograph of Millet's First Steps and transformed it onto the canvas, infusing it with his unique artistic vision.
