Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French) ca. 1824–34 This smaller, simplified version is an unfinished repetition of Ingres's renowned Grande Odalisque painting from 1814. The original work depicted an imagined concubine in a Middle Eastern harem and played a significant role in Ingres's concept of ideal beauty. Ingres continued to explore similar nude subjects, including this one, well into the 1860s, greatly influencing his numerous followers. While paintings in shades of gray like this were commonly used as guides for black and white prints, the specific purpose of this particular work remains uncertain.
