Edouard Manet (French) ca. 1867 Manet's unfinished painting is believed to depict the funeral of Charles Baudelaire, held on September 2, 1867. The artist himself attended the funeral, unlike some of Baudelaire's other friends who were still on vacation or stayed away due to the approaching summer storm. The painting captures the modest funeral procession at the base of the Butte Mouffetard, a hill located in southwest Paris. The scene is framed by the distinctive silhouettes of the Val de Grâce, the Panthéon, Saint-Etienne-du-Mont, and the Tour de Clovis in the background. Manet retained possession of the painting until his death. In 1894, Pissarro acquired it by exchanging one of his own landscapes for the artwork.
