The Grand Canal, Venice, Looking Southeast, with the Campo della Carità to the Right
Canaletto - Giovanni Antonio Canal (Italian) 1730s Canaletto was known for creating numerous on-site sketches, which he later utilized in his studio to compose views like the one depicted here. Although the bell tower depicted in the painting has since collapsed, the church and former convent adjacent to it now house the Galleria dell'Accademia, and the view presented in the artwork closely resembles the perspective from the current Accademia Bridge. In the 1730s, Canaletto developed a distinctive technique for portraying the turbulent waters of the canal, which became a recognizable hallmark of his style. This particular canvas is part of a series of twenty landscape paintings that Canaletto is believed to have produced for Joseph Smith (ca. 1674–1770), the British consul in Venice from 1744 to 1760.
