Henry Lerolle (French) 1885 Lerolle's most significant painting, revered by his fellow artists such as Degas, Denis, and Vuillard, unfolds within the choir loft of Paris' Saint-François-Xavier church. It captures an intimate group of individuals closely connected to Lerolle, including his wife and her sisters elegantly adorned with matching hats. Notably, Lerolle's brother-in-law, the composer Ernest Chausson, takes center stage at the organ. Lerolle himself occupies a contemplative position, gazing outward from the left side of the composition. Exhibited at the Salon of 1885, this masterpiece went on to achieve triumph in New York the following year during the inaugural significant Impressionism exhibition in America. One critic fondly recalled the hushed tones of spectators as they stood before the painting, seemingly awaiting the melodious voice of the depicted singer to resonate from its depths.
