Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French) 1852 Ingres created this exquisite devotional painting as a gift for his friend Louise Marcotte, who played a role in introducing the artist to his future wife, Delphine Ramel. The composition follows a Raphaelesque style and is based on an earlier painting Ingres completed in 1841 for the future czar Alexander II, featuring the patron saints of Russia, Alexander Nevsky and Nicholas (currently housed in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow). In this version, Ingres substituted the Russian saints with two French ones. He later painted four more variations of this composition, including a watercolor version for Madame Ingres in 1855 (now held in the Fogg Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts).
