Warwick Castle
Canaletto - Giovanni Antonio Canal (Italian) 1748 During his stay in England, Canaletto resided there for nine years, prompted by a decline in British visitors to Venice due to ongoing conflicts. It was during this period that he created this particular view of Warwick, showcasing the imposing Norman castle situated approximately twenty miles away from Birmingham. The painting was commissioned by one of Canaletto's significant English patrons and the owner of the castle, Francis Greville, who later became the 1st Earl of Warwick. This artwork is part of a series of paintings and drawings that Canaletto was commissioned to create for Lord Brooke, highlighting their patron-artist relationship and the historical significance of Warwick Castle.
