Vincent van Gogh (Dutch) June 1889 By late June 1889, Van Gogh became increasingly drawn to painting cypresses and decided to dedicate one of his initial series in Saint-Rémy to these towering trees. These studies, characterized by their thickly textured paint, capture the vibrant energy of the subjects. Among them is the Metropolitan Museum's vertical view of cypresses (49.30), as well as this majestic horizontal composition. Van Gogh depicted this artwork in reed-pen drawings that he sent to his brother on July 2. He considered the present work as one of his finest summer landscapes and was inspired to create two studio renditions in September: one of the same scale (now in the National Gallery, London) and a smaller replica intended as a gift for his mother and sister (held in a private collection).
