Edgar Degas (French) 1857–58; reworked 1860–62 During his second stay in Rome in 1857-1858, Degas created sketches of the composition that would later become this painting. Initially intended as a portrayal of a contemplative woman, the artwork took on a mysterious quality when Degas introduced elements such as an imaginary Middle Eastern cityscape, pink flowers, and two red ibises around 1860-1862. Around the same time, he also contemplated incorporating the vibrant birds into his larger historical painting, "Semiramis Building Babylon," which can be found in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. These additions transformed the painting, infusing it with an exotic and enigmatic atmosphere. Make a statement in any room with this framed poster, printed on thick matte paper.
