The United States Coast Guard, the nation's oldest continuous maritime service, was established on August 4, 1790, as the Revenue Cutter Service before being renamed the Coast Guard in 1915. Uniquely serving under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime and the Department of the Navy during wartime, the Coast Guard operates with approximately 40,000 active duty members across more than 800 stations nationwide.
