The Shri Yantra ("sacred instrument") is a Vedic diagram formed by nine interlocking triangles that surround and radiate out from the central (bindu) point. Four isosceles triangles with the apex upwards, representing Shiva or the Masculine. Five isosceles triangles with the apex downward, symbolizing female embodiment Shakti. Thus the Sri Yantra also represents the union of Masculine and Feminine Divine. I was inspired to draw this using what are known as Penrose or Impossible Triangles. A Penrose Triangle is a type of optical illusion. It consists of a two-dimensional figure which is instantly and subconsciously interpreted by the visual system as representing a projection of a three-dimensional object. The Penrose Triangle is featured prominently in the works of artist M. C. Escher, whose earlier depictions of impossible objects partly inspired it.
