Never comfortable in the traditional studio setting, Toni Frissell was known for bringing fashion photography outside in an almost cinematic style. Fashion Models in Swim Suits, however, proves she was capable of creating a vivid story despite the neutral studio set. Frissell’s signature low-point perspective and use of light transform the curve of the backdrop into a distant beach horizon. Shot in 1950 for Harper’s Bazaar, Fashion Models in Swim Suits exemplifies Frissell’s trademark emphasis on active women. Her flipper-clad models don’t simply lounge in the sand, but rather seem to gaze out at the ready for the perfect wave in which to dive.
