What is orris root?  The popular garden type of bearded iris, commonly called fleur-de-lis and purple flag, is the source of orris root. The plant's root has a violet-like scent when it has matured for at least two years. Powdered orris root "fixes" the smell of other materials in addition to retaining its perfume due to its high starch content. Because of this, dried iris root is used as a fixative in perfumery and potpourri mixtures to help maintain the scent of the other herb and spice components.
