  A VU meter measures sound intensity levels in audio equipment such as mixers, amplifiers, tape recorders, and turntables. While readings are displayed in decibels, the zero mark does not correspond to the threshold of hearing (0 dB). Essential for recording, broadcasting, and live sound, VU meters provide immediate visual feedback to prevent distortion from excessive signal levels.
