Viridiflora Antique Rose Essence, Rosa chinensis

Viridiflora is a Chinese rose over 5 thousand years old. This unique rose is a sport, a spontaneous mutation, of Old Blush. It was painted in ancient Chinese art, in 1743 and later seen in gardens in what is now China. Viridiflora was originally only grown in the Forbidden City, property of the emperors. The sepals are green, turning copper, then rust color, with a peppery, spicy scent and taste. The leaves are unmistakably of the rose species, a pretty green. Viridiflora blooms profusely throughout the year in my gardens.   By 1833- 1849, Viridiflora was growing in Georgia and South Carolina, and as far north as Pennsylvania.
