Egyptian 14K Gold Swivel Stone Scarab Ring

Egypt or Levant, 2nd Intermediate Period, circa 1783-1532 BC. A naturalistic banded tan steatite stone scarab, pierced for suspension and mounted on an antique gold band which is wound together at the front and back holes of the scarab which is also set in a gold band. The base depicting a figure of a priest in a long cloak holding a lotus stem in one hand and another item, maybe a bird, in the other hand. Behind him is a palm frond; in front of him are hieroglyphs signifying a sunrise, life, and goodness. The scarab is 2 cm L. Ring is size 11. weight 11.68 g. Intact. Nice solid gold band. The scarab beetle was revered by the ancient Egyptians for its seemingly regenerative powers and as a talisman for protection and status. Scarabs and amulets such as this were worn to ensure safe passage into the afterlife and this may well have served as a signet for a nobleman or scribe.
