The changes from gen1 to gen2 were fundamental and addressed changes in camera gear as mirrorless gear upsized into heavy and big full-frame bodies and lenses.  This same gear is what we all still use today and this is why the gen2 packs will continue to be made - they  new gen2a packs will just fit our gear better than the gen2.
