The turtle is a stunning, amazingly complex creature. Enduring from our prehistoric past, it is known to have inhabited the sea’s depths while dinosaurs reigned colossal over 200 million years ago.  Belize offers a nesting ground for several species, each of their names conjuring an image of the features that distinguish one from the other: Green, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Loggerhead—they traverse the Belizean coast, a hard-wrought elegance in their seeming imperturbability as they navigate their under-water course. The moon provides a beacon of sorts, its light illuminating an ancient, sacred path: the female turtle crawls ashore, crossing stretches of glowing white sand to dig a teardrop-shaped nest with her flippers, where she will lay between 100 and 150 eggs before returning to the sea.
