Very Large Japanese Imari Polychrome Charger 18 in with Dragon, Phoenix, Kirins Mid 19th Century
An exceptionally large (18 in diameter) porcelain charger with many different, non-repetitive scenes of dragons, kirins, and a phoenix. The charger has been painted with polychrome enamels and gilt in very intricate designs surrounding a central landscape scene. The under-glaze cobalt used is a very pleasing pale blue color. This cobalt blue is also used on the underside in paintings of birds and clouds. There is a shallow rounded unglazed foot with six saggar marks on the glazed base. There is a square Japanese makers mark in cobalt blue on the base. MEASUREMENTS 18” (45.7 cm) diameter x 2 3/8” (5.9 cm) tall. Weighs 7 lbs 6.6 oz (3315 g) CONDITION The charger has no cracks, chips, breaks or repairs. The gilding is in very good condition. There are signs of wear and scratches, especially in the central medallion. The paintings on this charger are so well done and imaginative. A true work of Japanese art.
