Abercrombie Heavy Weight Tartan. The tartan can be traced to 1831, when it was first recorded in a book of James Logan called '' The Scottish Gael'' The name comes from the tiny town in Abercromby within Fife. The land and title were granted to a patron to Edward 1 of England, who was later William de Abercromby suggesting a Norman source. The Abercromby title was transferred to a different portion belonging to the same family during the 17th century which was that of the Abercrombies of Birkenbog in Banffshire. This family was active in opposition to the Reformation and was a staunch supporter of and defending the Covenanters until the close of the 17th century at which point David Abercromby eventually conformed to the existing Presbyterian church.
