The Beethoven Frieze, The Hostile Powers Part 2 In 1901, ๐—ž๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐˜ painted the ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜‡๐—ฒ for the 14th ๐—ฉ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ฎ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป in celebration of the composer, and featured a monumental polychrome sculpture by Max Klinger. Meant for the exhibition only, the frieze was painted directly on the walls with light materials. After the exhibition the painting was preserved, although it did not go on display again until 1986. The Beethoven Frieze is on permanent display in the Vienna Secession Building in a specially built, climate-controlled basement room. Middle wall: the hostile forces; Typhoeus the giant, against whom even gods fought in vain; his daughters, the three Gorgons, who symbolise lust and lechery, intemperance and gnawing care.
