The star effect that is called asterism and is caused by microscopic rutile inclusions aligned in a very particular way. Asterism is an optical illusion created by light reflecting off these rutile inclusions. It can be a little tricky to find the star at first because you have to locate the area of the crystal with the rutile. It is helpful to rock the crystal under direct light until you see a chatoyant line and then you can follow that line to the star. Clear outdoor sunlight or a high powered flashlight are ideal for this.
