Our suffering Lord, dying on the Cross, is yet surrounded by the majesty of the Old Testament prophets, holding up their scrolls of prophecy as they float around Jesus, of which He is the confirmation and fulfillment. Intensely, radiantly above Jesus are the Hebrew letters of the Tetragrammaton, the profound name of God, resting in the Star of David, proclaiming that Jesus is the Lord God himself, Elohim and Adonai, creator and savior of the world. At his feet are the three Marys- Mary of Cleofas on the left, Mary Magdalena weeping at the cross, her beautiful long hair showing, and Mary his mother, reaching out to Jesus. The Disciple John, in a coat of many colors, is leading Mary away to his home. We've spent a lot of time looking at this painting.
