USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 5–8  Native Range: China Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil; intolerant of drought and overly wet conditions. Light: Partial shade to full sun; foliage performs best with protection from hot afternoon sun, especially in warmer climates. Height in the Garden: 25–40 ft Attributes: A small to medium-sized deciduous tree, famed for its striking bark. The bark on young trunks and branches is smooth and olive-green with prominent, vertical, silvery-white stripes, creating a snakeskin-like pattern. Features unlobed or shallowly 3-lobed, dark green leaves that turn shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall. Produces drooping chains (racemes) of small, yellow flowers in spring. Notes: Commonly known as Snakebark Maple or David's Maple. The unique, striated bark is the primary ornamental feature and provides significant winter interest. Often grown as a multi-stemmed tree to better display the decorative bark.
