Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Dawn Redwood
USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 4 Native Range: China Soil: Moist, low pH. Light: Full sun to part shade. Height in the Garden: Huge, depending on water availability. Attributes: Dawn Redwood is a fast growing, beautiful, living fossil, deciduous conifer that thrives in moist to wet soil. It is common-ish, but unusual. Notes: It is a deciduous conifer, so that means it loses its leaves in the cold autumn and winter months. Many large, mature Dawn Redwoods have been cut down and destroyed by ignorant arborists and land owners. I've also had many confused customers contact me about 'dying' Dawn Redwood starts. Uses: Bonsai and small specimen tree. Size: Comes in a 4" square, black, plastic nursery pot. Ceramic pot is for display only.
