Quercus mexicana, Mexican Red Oak.
USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 7 Native Range: Eastern and central Mexico. Soil: Average soil conditions and neutral pH. Light: Full sun. Height in the Garden: 30' Attributes: Broadleaf evergreen oak with narrow, elongated foliage and a narrow-ish, attractive structure. Features pachyderm like bark. Notes: This is a wonderful, broadleaf evergreen oak from the magical, primordial mysterious and beautiful Mexico. The entire breadth of Mexico is a botanical hotspot and treasure chest of extreme oak and conifer diversity rivaled only by East Asia. I love Mexico, Mexican Plants, Mexican people and especially Mexican foods. Q. mexicana might make a good candidate for bonsai culture given its small-ish proportions. Uses: Unusual collector's tree.
