Star Magnolia, Magnolia stellata

USDA Cold Hardiness Zone: 4 Native Range: Japan Soil: Moist, well drained Light: Part shade to full sun Height in the Garden: Up to 20', though I've never seen one so tall. Size: ~4" square pot Attributes: Deciduous, broad leaves, flowers in late winter to spring before the leaves emerge. Notes: Magnolia stellata makes a wonderful bonsai, though they seem to be few and far in between in the United States.....from what I can tell. They are good for making short, fat, stumpy trees as well as other styles and forms. M. stellata is a wonderful species that should be used more often. Also a wonderful large shrub or small tree for the garden.
