The Story These handwoven lotus-shaped tea coasters are made from antique Kasuri cloth. Kasuri is a complex dyeing technique that became popular in the Edo period. After carefully considering the patterns that they wanted to achieve, Kasuri makers dyed their thread in advance, creating a pattern directly onto the thread. They then wove the thread, revealing the pattern that was dyed into them. This technique was so labor intensive that it fell out of favor, and is now difficult to find. This cloth was repurposed by artist Hiromi Kasukabe to make these beautiful one-of-a-kind coasters.
