In the city of Heze, (formerly named Caozhou), Shandong Provence, People's Republic of China this cultivar blossoms late-spring to early-summer. 'Xiang Yu' is an upright, deciduous, woody shrub bearing deeply-lobed, dark-green leaves with elliptic to ovate leaflets and large, 8-inch, upward-facing, fragrant, semi-double to double, white flowers with a rose wash in late spring and early summer. The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (peonies) for over three thousand years!
