Wallerius, named after the Greek word meaning “moon”. It was given this name because people historically believed the mineral waxed and waned with the cycles of the Moon. Selenite is crystalized and transparent, but commonly mislabeled as another variety of gypsum, Satin Spar. Satin Spar is the silky and fibrous variety of gypsum. Selenite is a very distinctive crystal with its sheer, white/clear appearance. It looks almost angelic in nature.
