Carolyn Denham and Roderick Field launched Merchant and Mills in a former toy factory in East Sussex, England. Starting completely from scratch, they built and scoured materials and tools they knew people like themselves (a fashion designer and photographer) would need to make and create in the tradition of craft. Business success required expansion in space and offerings, and two years later they reopened with a studio, an upstairs sewing school, a mezzanine, and a ground floor filled with all the wonderful things needed for sewing and making with the conscious and sustainable ethos for which Merchant and Mills had come to be known.
