Nyx

Offering Candles to Nyx: Greek goddess of darkness and shadows, daughter of Chaos, and bringer of the night.  She is a primordial deity, existing during the dawn of creation. Some stories claim she mated with none yet produced numerous gods and goddesses such as Moros (god of doom), Thantos (god of death), Hypnos (god of sleep), Nemesis (goddess of revenge), and Apate (goddess of deceit), among many others.  She is known to be the only deity that Zeus was ever afraid of. A story was once told of Hera, Zeus' wife, who planned to overthrow Zeus from his throne. She convinced Nyx's son, Hypnos, god of sleep, to put Zeus into a deep slumber. Unfortunately, this plan proved  futile as Zeus easily broke from the sleeping spell. Realizing what Hpynos had done, he chased after him until Hynos found refuge in his mother's cave. The king of the gods dared not to step any further beyond the darkness of her lair for fear of angering Nyx, whom he knew was more ancient and threatening than him.    E
