Born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien in 1941, Anne Rice grew up in the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans, the setting for many of her novels. Her father worked for the postal service and was also an artist and writer. Her older sister, Alice Borchardt, wrote fantasy and horror fiction. Rice's mother died when she was 15. Anne married poet Stan Rice in 1961, and they had two children, Christopher and Michele.
