The first installation of routing the discharge from a wet flue gas desulphurization(FGD) system into a natural draft cooling tower shell in the Western Hemispherewas completed at the 620 MW supercritical coal fired Unit 3 at AEP/BuckeyePower’s Cardinal Plant in Brilliant, Ohio in 2011. The cooling tower was alsoconverted at the time from a crossflow to a counterflow configuration with afiberglass fill support structure (FRP). This paper will describe the process fordetermining the scope of the retrofits, highlight construction challenges and thesuccessful operation of the FGD and the cooling tower conversion.
