Down these mean streets one must go who is not themselves mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. They are the hero; they are everything. They must be a complete person and a common person and yet an unusual person. They must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a person of honor — by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. They must be the best person in their world and a good enough person for any world.
