Joy on a Stem Note Cards

Also available as museum-quality posters. Poppies are my indicator that Summer has arrived. They literally pop up out of nowhere, spread joy, then close up with one of the nicest looking seed pods I know of. They are grand from the first leaves, through to the seed pod just before it explodes. I think people who like poppies, live near each other. At least that is what my sampling of the neighborhood says. To go a step further, they even are in clusters as to what type of poppy. There are the Mexican/California Poppy homes. I get it. If you have a family, or something that absorbs all your time, sprinkle some seeds. Set it and forget it. Sometime later these amazing little baubles of orange appear and stay for a long time. Summer gardening for the next 5 years, checkbox. Then there are the extreme poppy growers; colors that won’t end on stem that reach to the sky. These plants are not perennial, so they are a bit more maintenance. But, what amazing outcomes: colors that you would never expect, thin petals so as to almost seem like a spider’s web on a stem and sizes varying from giant to tiny. Then there are the Red Poppy houses. I love the red poppy houses. Often, their poppies are grouped. Flit from the tiny, delicate red with a white edging, to the normal red poppy and finally, to the gargantuan, gorgeous expression of energy and joy on a stem. I am talking about this one. This beauty was standing alone in a yard, but right next to a house that has a poppy garden. So, maybe a seed just found its way into just the right place in the yard. Why would it be “just right.” Well, for a gem like this, surprise is the best introduction. This was in a corner lot, and somehow the poppy found a site that was readily visible from only one direction. The one I don’t use. So, twice during the same week, I literally stumbled up on this beauty. It is so striking and the sheen that it had was wonderful. The poppy was almost shining the sunlight back at the sun. The bloom is so deep, you just want to jump in and swim in the stark contrasts inside. I just knew I had to share it with you.
